European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
