They're Doing in America What They Executed to Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most telling and distinctive moments – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of multiple weeks, the American president started showing the public his designs for an ornate dance hall twice the size of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing to erect it.

He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the existing assessment of fatalities resulting from his reductions to USAID stands at 600,000 and growing, and presently an analysis forecast his energy policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have attempted – really, no previous leader would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' to 'the meek shall die to cholera'

As bewildering as it is to witness the leader seek to钠覆 the old idea regarding democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have witnessed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Essentially, they converted a persona of compassion into an icon of animosity who approves specifically the brutality that he denounced in biblical teachings; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold

Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my upbringing, since in theory the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the fastest-growing cadre of Americans may possess limited understanding of him as they consider themselves skeptics or uncertain individuals or nones. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that there are pearls of great price within Christian narrative.

It is decidedly not the story of a mighty king arising; rather, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to avoid covert authorities. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine focuses on affection for fellow humans, especially for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and protecting. Jesus' answer to violence is to turn the other cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a means to teach the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever someone steals your coat you ought to provide him your sweater too.

The apparent and direct truth that Christ in biblical accounts advocates for a type of profound affection centered on the needy is what has always made Christianity rather a scandalous religion: engaging for the populace, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestantism was so prevalent that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Conflict for the Best Within Us

So I have been inspired to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump develop in this past year. It has served as great solace to assist in constructing the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged citizens to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags throughout each rally and calls to the best parts in US history.

We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you welcome them and welcome him or reject?

The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by reference to the best in US heritage, similar to Christianity is most protected through connection to what makes it special and beautiful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In neither case does it imply acting as if the most damaging regarding America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it represents both meekness and belief, a mixture that serious national faithful should be comfortable with.
