Time is ripe to alter Manchester United's tactical setup - Ruben Amorim states.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was one of multiple senior players absent from the Boxing Day victory against Newcastle United.

Head coach Ruben Amorim argues that changing Man Utd's tactical system due to media noise would have meant "the end" for him.

In a first against Newcastle United, Amorim abandoned his customary back three formation with wide defenders and chose to field an orthodox four-man defense with two defensive midfielders.

He himself conceded this effectively transformed into a six-man defensive block in the final stages as his squad clung on for a crucial result - securing just their second-ever shutout of the campaign.

While he once memorably said that not even the highest authority could pressure him to change his approach, Amorim asserts the option to utilize different formations has always been part of his strategy.

Yet, he stresses he could solely implement the change when his team were performing at an acceptable level - or else it would seem as if he was succumbing to outside pressure.

"At the time I arrived here the previous campaign, I understood perhaps I lacked the players to perform effectively in a back three, but it was the commencement of a journey," he said.

"The goal was to forge an style. Today is a distinct time. We lack a full complement of personnel, and we need be flexible, so they understand why we are switching things up.

"It is not because of the influence of the media, or the supporters.

"Whenever you criticize changing the system constantly, I can't change because the squad will think I'm changing because of you and I believe that is a disaster for the coach.

"When we are performing strongly in our preferred setup, that becomes the opportunity to evolve.

"This will help us grow into a stronger side because when all the personnel are back, we are not intending to employ three defenders exclusively."

Availability Crisis Persist

Having only two victories in eight games prior to beating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is accurate to state his side have been in good form.

He is, though, operating with a injury-ravaged roster, with seven senior stars already ruled out for the forthcoming fixture against struggling Wolves.

That number will grow if playmaker Mason Mount is unable to recover the knock that led to his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is a key name who will miss the Wolves match, even though he is reportedly urging his manager to let him to return after his muscle injury.

"Fernandes is already insisting he needs to train," said Amorim. "But there is no chance he is going to play against Wolves. No way. That's definitive."

Fernandes' Leadership Endures

Nevertheless, the Portuguese star will probably continue to be a prominent presence, as whereas most unavailable players view matches from the stands, Fernandes was spotted monitoring the warm-ups from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim expects his captain to carry on providing insight.

"The guy is a natural leader," he stated. "He must not be that guy that when he is not playing, he's silent and speaking. He's always speaking. That's why he's the captain.

"There are bad things at times - the way he gesticulates - but he has a multitude of strengths. After he recovers, he heads to watch the other guys training. There are a many things you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he wants my position or not, but he's a born leader. He is a leader."

Recovery Schedule for Injured Personnel

Although the precise timeline for the captain's comeback - and that of fellow unavailable stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unknown, by the end of January, the club will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international competition.
